FOCUS V - Background

The Fifth FOCUS-SOASCIS Conference

Background

FOCUS, the acronym for Forum Cendekiawan Umat Serantau (“Regional Umma’s Intellectuals Forum”) was founded in 2006, initially serving as a vehicle for one of the intellectual and scholarly activities of International Institute of Islamic Thought, Malaysia (IIITM). Its main goal is to provide an intellectual forum for Muslim academics and scholars, especially from the heartland of the Southeast Asian region, to discourse on important issues pertaining to Islam and the Muslims and the various intellectual challenges confronting the contemporary Muslim umma. To date four FOUS conferences have been held. The first was held in December 2006 in Cherating, Kuantan, Pahang followed by the second FOCUS in January, 2008 in Kuala Lumpur. The third FOCUS was held in April 2010 in Palembang, Indonesia and the fourth in June 2011 in Phuket, Thailand.

The Fifth FOCUS-SOASCIS Conference 2013

The present FOCUS conference, the fifth in the series, is hosted by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Centre of Islamic Studies (SOASCIS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam. It was planned to be held in the Philippines with Mindanao State University as the host. However, due to unavoidable circumstances, the venue has to be changed to Brunei Darussalam. From now on, this series of conferences is to be known as FOCUS-SOASCIS Conference, since SOASCIS has agreed to institutionalize it as one of its regular regional programs, especially catering to the umma’s needs within the new ASEAN Community that is to officially materialize in 2015. However, IIIT through its East Asia branch will continue to be a partner in the organisation of future FOCUS-SOASCIS Conferences.
